What is not entrepreneurship
With so many explanations on the subject, it becomes increasingly difficult to know what is really meant by the term ‘Entrepreneurship’
I see constantly publications, articles, books, texts and a wide myriad of knowledge developed on the theme entrepreneurship in various areas and media, some credible, others not so much. The segmentation of the matter seems to have no end: corporate entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship in family businesses, ethnic entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial start-up, and so on.
With so many explanations on the subject, it becomes increasingly difficult to know what is really meant by the term ‘Entrepreneurship’. I even find myself in some situations, with cruel doubts about the legitimacy of the presence of some terms in the definitions that I see, and the worst is that I can not see any tendency to reach a consensus on a single definition.
So, rather then the other way and seek here to define what I do not consider entrepreneurship. This way, I can give space to each build their own definition, an attitude more democratic and more in line with what entrepreneurship education should be: the construction of knowledge by the weighted union between their convictions and external information, giving maximum freedom of interpretation and contributing to further expand the different views on the subject.
Entrepreneurs
This is the first and most common confusion that is created in this profusion of nomenclatures. Many definitions put business owners and entrepreneurs interchangeably, when in fact, the entrepreneur is more than a businessman. Anyone who opens a business is, strictly speaking, a businessman.
An entrepreneur, on the other hand, goes beyond building a successful organization based in boldness, determination, creativity, relationships, achievement, self-confidence, flexibility and vision. The entrepreneur who does not have at least half of these characteristics can not be considered an entrepreneur.
Who opens another bakery or gas station without having glimpsed an opportunity, without having built a solid and achievable vision of the future or if prepared for any vicissitude to find the way, can be an entrepreneur, but hardly consider an entrepreneur .
Franchise
Although it is possible to see an entrepreneur leading a franchise, I believe that the franchise is a type of business model that moves away, or should depart from the true entrepreneur for the simple reason that a franchise limits one of the things that the entrepreneur cherishes most: freedom .
With greater or lesser degree, all franchises offer as a benefit what the entrepreneur sees as restriction: Branding, standardization of methodology and processes, a single register of suppliers, pricing policies uniform, centralized infrastructure, brand and image, and other elements that, together, bring security to a business model already tested and probably with very low risks.
An entrepreneur can even put the experience as a franchisee stage of their learning process, but hardly a franchise sees as its ultimate goal.
Inheritance
Family businesses can be of two types: those caused by founder and entrepreneur as those already established were delivered to the following generations. I can say with some certainty that true entrepreneurs are more concerned with the sustainability of your business in the long term than profitability alone. This fact alone can increase the chances of seeing ahead successors entrepreneurs successful business created by one or more previous generations.
Entrepreneurs form (or rather, ‘forge’) entrepreneurs to continue their business even if they are not their direct successors, or even family. However, there is a huge number of heirs who call themselves entrepreneurs unaware that does not have the qualifications that placed the founder ahead of the creation and development of the organization that took over.
Leaders
There is a great confusion about the definitions of entrepreneurs as leaders. Leaders are different entrepreneurs. Some types of entrepreneurs can be influential, captivating, able to mobilize people around common causes, great achievements by enabling teams to understand and explore what is best for each person. But that alone does not make a leader of an entrepreneur. A leader is not necessarily equipped with high flexibility and adaptability, though I know practicing participatory management model.
A leader is not necessarily determined and persevering, but knows how to build and convey positive visions of the future influencing followers than himself. A leader does not usually put ‘hands-on’, to lead projects. Although usual act more as a facilitator to make people more free, prefers to be the conductor and govern the team’s efforts, than dirty their own hands.
Innovators
The economist Joseph Schumpeter was one of the most prominent scholars of entrepreneurship. Its line of studies linking the figure to the innovative entrepreneur. Most academic studies in Brazil also follows this line. Before proceeding in the argument, it is important to differentiate an idea of an innovation.
One idea is any manifestation of creative thinking, while an innovation is the result of the evolutionary process of an idea in terms of value. An innovation is therefore an idea that serves to someone or something. That said, it is established the point of intersection between the innovator and entrepreneur.
Every initiative of the entrepreneur is surrounded by some degree of innovation. There needs to be a new product or service, can be a simple change in a process or improvement. If no one had thought of it, then it is an innovation. The entrepreneur is one who puts innovation into practice, it performs and produces noticeable results. People who are good at generating innovation, as scientists and researchers, are not necessarily entrepreneurs. Entrepreneur turns innovation into business.
And then, you already have enough information to write their own definition of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship?
